AuthorMichael Wilcox
Michael Wilcox has a varied background, including periods as a professional artist, a conservator of art works and an engineer, which in turn led to a study of light physics in relation to the needs of the artist. His studies led to the book Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green. Published in Engish, Dutch, Japanese, Korean and Chinese, this book has changed the way that countless artists now mix and use their colours. This publication was followed by The Wilcox Guide to the Finest Watercolour Paints which has led to many of the changes in the pigments used in artists' paints today. Specialist mixing palettes, workbooks and courses were then developed and the School of Colour was formed on an international basis.
SummaryAs our understanding of color mixing was turned on its head by `Blue & Yellow Don't Make Green', so this book offers an entirely new way of deciding on color arrangements which can either harmonize or contrast. There have been many attempts to define color harmony and our ideas have varied from the scientific to the mystical. At present we are in a muddle, with a range of conflicting approaches adding further confusion. The only area in common over the centuries and around the world seems to be our feeling that the color combinations found in nature work extremely well. We find the colors which surround us in the rain forest, the desert, plain or seascape always balance beautifully. Yet when artists attempt to depict these scenes in their work the colors seldom harmonize.Based on a thorough review of the way that colors of nature are related, this book offers the first real breakaway from the established thinking in this area. This new approach would not have been possible without the research into color mixing that we have already carried out. Artists not only need to understand the color relationships of nature, they need to be able to mix and apply these colors. Some one thousand color arrangements are offered in this book, together with easy to follow instructions on mixing and using them. The color work of earlier artists is examined in depth alongside the color swatches. Why does a certain painting by Monet, for example, appeal to so many people? The explanation is given, in simple terms, and the reader is shown how to use the same approach in their own work. For the artist wishing to extract everything from color. Suitable for any media.
