Born in Denmark, Bente Starcke King received her bachelor's degree in art and illustration in Copenhagen before coming to the United States. For many years she freelancd with various natural science departments at Cornell University while raising her three children. She later held the position of botanical illustrator at the L.H. Bailey Hortorium for fifteen years. While there she executed scientifically accurate pen-and-ink drawings of plants for publication in scientific journals and books.
