Advances in Colour Harmony & Contrast for the Home Decorator Ref: 1931780021

Author
Michael Wilcox

Michael Wilcox has a varied background, including periods as a professional artist, a conservator of art works and an engineer, which in turn led to a study of light physics in relation to the needs of the artist. His studies led to the book Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green. Published in Engish, Dutch, Japanese, Korean and Chinese, this book has changed the way that countless artists now mix and use their colours. This publication was followed by The Wilcox Guide to the Finest Watercolour Paints which has led to many of the changes in the pigments used in artists' paints today. Specialist mixing palettes, workbooks and courses were then developed and the School of Colour was formed on an international basis.

Summary

Almost everybody decorates their home at one time or another. some decorate many homes. The universal questions are always; `What colors should I use'? What goes with what, and why? Whether the home decorator wants to bring a soft harmonious feeling to a room, make it appear wider, taller or longer, or seeks to make a bold statement, color is vital. The usual `inspiration' is in the form of a bewildering range of pre-mixed colors in the hardware store. This book offers complete guidance; from the selection of a color arrangement to the actual mixing of the chosen hues. Over 1,000 color combinations are offered, together with examples of rooms decorated using the arrangements shown. The reader can choose to decorate individual rooms in isolation or to take an ever changing theme from room to room, leading to a blend of harmonies throughout the home. Advice is given, and examples shown, of the different approaches which can be taken to make over different rooms, from the kitchen to the bedroom. Also on how to make a room appear to be larger, higher or smaller. Most of us would like a `longer' hallway and a `larger' kitchen. Most importantly, the reasons why certain color arrangements harmonize, contrast, appear larger or smaller are clearly explained. The difference between finishes is also illustrated, from matt to semi gloss to gloss. For the DIY enthusiast advice is given on mixing all of the colors shown. Whether the paint comes from a store or from the old tins of color left over from the last time. Beautiful soft colored grays from that old can of vivid green and the red left over from the garage door. For the home decorator wishing to extract the most from color.
