AuthorLinda Ligon
Linda Collier Ligon started Interweave Press on her dining room table in 1975 after her third child was born. From this humble beginning her publishing company has grown to encompass seven diverse magazines and more than a hundred books in print, and from that home-based sole proprietorship to a corporation with more than 60 employees and more than 150 books in print. She is currently CEO and editorial director of Interweave Press, having handed off the presidency and other key responsibilities in late 2002. She is also president and publisher of Natural Home magazine. She is a past president of the Publishers Marketing Association. Linda lives and works in Loveland, Colorado.
SummaryA heartening, wise and hilarious collection of personal essays about life, weaving and the creative process. The collection's extraordinary pleasures involve textiles and language equally - whether the author is exploring what it means to have a "loom-shaped life" or asking the questions "What's warp, what's weft, what are the interlacements?" Her precise, probing and often quirky language and thoughts are always engaging. Time, yarn and the works of our hands - even when the processes involved "do not yield easily to language" - are threads that run through these lively conversations.
In these essays textiles are the author's windows on the world. Readers join her as she looks into the past through her grandmother's sewing tools, contemplates organizing her basement stash of yarns, and travels to a country whole textiles show past and present mixing and co-existing in unusual ways.In one essay Ligon speculates, "Perhaps if my mother hadn't laid me down for a nap on a chenille bedspread at age two, I wouldn't have become a weaver." Whether her words urge readers to act, describe her battles with a fine linen yarn, or recount what her computer spell-check program suggests to replace weaving terms, Linda Ligon's essays will enchant, tickle and please you.
